What's in the Axle?

If you’ve seen it once, you’ve seen it one too many times! The infamous broken axle!

The later it gets in the afternoon, the more you throw caution to the wind. Instead of backing up and trying another line, you throw your empty soda can in the back seat and stand on the gas.

Just about the same time your sleeping bag and camping gear is launched out of the vehicle, the peaceful mountain air is filled with sounds of tires screeching over granite, floating valves, and one loud bang.

You look over at your buddy sitting next to you. He yells, “Shut er’ down Ethel, she’s suckin’ mud”. You yell back, “Looks like a good place to camp!”

GM 14 bolt 10.5. Full floater
The 14 bolt rear axle is one of the most widely used rear axles in the off road industry. Not only are 14 bolts strong, bulletproof, and easy to build, they are in every junkyard from Kansas to Never-Never land. They came in almost all 3/4 ton chevy trucks from 73 to 87, 2WD and 4WD alike.

One of the most common front axle upgrades is the Dana 44. It is a perfect replacement for a jeep or comparable sized vehicle. We can build you an axle to whatever specs you require. There is the option of standard rotation or reverse rotation. Not to mention, the lug pattern can be either 5, 6, or 8.

CJ Dana 44 rear
The dana 44 rear axle is one of the most commonly used axles. Not only are they extremely strong and reliable, they are easily upgraded. Most components used to build these axles are always readily available and priced to buy.

Early CJ offset 44 rear
In the old flatfender and early cj-5 jeeps, the most common rear axle was the offset, tapered, dana 44.

FRONT
If you feel like a 44 isn’t going to cut it for you, your next option is the Dana 60! The Dana 60 is considered a true “1 ton” front end. We can also build you a Dana 60 front axle to whatever spec you desire. Once again, there is the option of standard rotation or reverse rotation. The lug pattern can also be 5, 6, 8, or metric 8. Another option for the 60, is whether you want kingpin or balljoint knuckles.

REAR
Another very common rear axle, especially in jeep applications, is the Dana 60. These axles have been around even longer than the 14 bolt. However, the 60 rear is much more versatile. It can be built to fit just about any application imaginable. It is not uncommon to see them under anything from a 46 Willy’s to a 67 Chevelle. They are easy to shorten and can be built to fit any lug pattern with any brake configuration.
